Home robots need not be humanoid: form should follow the job

When people say "home robot," they often picture a robot shaped like a person. I understand the impulse. Homes are built for people, so stairs and countertops reward a human-shaped body. Still, I don't think every useful home robot needs that form. Form should follow the job. And for years, homeowners have lived with non-humanoid robots that prove the point.

The point is simple. If you wait for one general-purpose humanoid robot before you take domestic robots seriously, you will ignore machines that already earn their keep. I expect humanoid robots in the home from companies such as Weave Robotics, Tesla, Figure and others. I don't expect them to make specialized robots obsolete. I expect a mix.

The jobs already staffed by unglamorous shapes

Floor cleaning, pool care, window washing and lawn mowing are not science-fiction demos. They are consumer categories people buy today. Robot vacuums stay low and stable because floors are flat. Pool robots are built for water and tile, not for carrying groceries. Window robots cling to glass. Mowers cut grass in a yard boundary. None of them need a human face to justify their existence.

Those categories have proved their value in real households. They keep improving as products people actually buy, not as toys or demos from a decade ago. That doesn't mean a single-task cleaner is the whole future of domestic work — only that matching shape to task already works. Form fitted to the job is a strength, not a failure of robotics.

As of mid-2026, these are the latest open industry figures I can cite. According to the International Federation of Robotics' World Robotics 2025 service-robot summary, close to 20 million consumer service robots were sold in 2024, up 11 percent, and robots for domestic tasks such as floor cleaning and lawn mowing were by far the largest group. According to IDC's summary of its 2025 cleaning-robot trackers, global household cleaning-robot shipments reached 32.72 million units in 2025, up 20.1 percent year over year. Within that total, IDC counts about 24.12 million smart vacuums, 2.37 million window-cleaning robots, 1.99 million robot lawn mowers and 2.75 million in-ground pool cleaners. Those are annual shipments, not household ownership rates. The sales numbers show real scale. They don't mean most homes already own one. They still answer anyone who treats non-humanoid home robots as a side note.

Humanoid robots are a versatility bet, not a requirement

I grant the smart objection. A humanoid-shaped robot can, in principle, move through a human-designed house and handle multi-step chores that a disk on the floor can't. Stairs, human tools and laundry between rooms are real reasons companies pitch a human form. That's a versatility bet. It's not a rule that every chore must wait for that body.

I expect home humanoid robots from firms such as Weave Robotics, Tesla and Figure, and from others chasing the same idea. As of this draft, I treat those programs as in development or research for ordinary consumers, not as robots you can generally order for the doorstep like a vacuum. Capability claims and timelines should stay attributed to the companies. My expectation is judgment, not a shipping date.

If humanoid robots become common, specialists still make sense. A mower doesn't need hands. A pool cleaner doesn't need legs. Waiting for one body to do every job is a fine research story. It's a weak household plan.

Judge the work, not the silhouette

Here's the practical frame I use. Start from the chore you want done. Match a tool that is available now when one exists. Check what is still a prototype when the pitch is a humanoid robot. Don't treat "looks human" as a quality score.

IDC's 2025 figures also show wire-free robot mowers taking a large share of mower shipments and growing much faster than boundary-wire models. Categories evolve inside non-humanoid form factors. Improvement doesn't require a biped redesign.

Today's specialists are usually single-domain. They don't replace a general home assistant. Humanoid robots, if they work, may cover more of the messy middle of household labor. Until they ship as real consumer products, they are not a reason to dismiss the staff you can already hire by the job.

Expect a mixed robotic household staff

Here's where I land. Everyone should expect a mix of humanoid and non-humanoid robots in the home of the future. Collectively they will perform the tasks a household needs. Different bodies. Different jobs. One outcome: work gets done.

Home and Robot already talks about that outcome as a robotic household staff — not one hero machine, but a set of robots that share the load. This column isn't a rewrite of that vision. It's the form-factor argument underneath it. Non-humanoid specialists are already on the roster. Humanoid robots, I think, will join them. They won't erase them.

If you are choosing what to buy or wait for, I wouldn't freeze the household until a humanoid-robot keynote becomes a product page with a real order path. I would automate the jobs that already have proven tools. I would keep an open mind about generalists when they clear availability, price and safety for ordinary homes. And I would stop treating a human silhouette as the only legitimate shape of a home robot.
