Walden Robotics exits stealth with $300M seed round

Walden Robotics, a Cambridge, Massachusetts Physical AI company, publicly exited stealth on July 15, 2026. According to its launch announcement, it raised $300 million in a seed round that values the company at $1.1 billion.

The round was co-led by Toyota — Toyota Motor Corp, Toyota Invention Partners and Toyota Ventures — and Deviation Capital. Participants listed on the announcement include NVIDIA, Boeing, AE Ventures, Samsung Ventures, Prologis Ventures, CoreWeave Ventures and financial partners Calibrate Ventures, Colle Capital, Shine Capital, NextView Ventures, Squarepoint Capital, One Madison Group, KAS Venture Partners and Menlo Ventures, among others. The company also posted the debut the same day on X (@WaldenRobotics).

What Walden says it is building

Walden says it is building general-purpose robots that continuously learn while doing real work alongside people. Its homepage and team page describe a full stack of hardware, software, Physical AI and an application layer, with an initial focus on manufacturing and logistics production deployments. Homepage task labels include machine tending, tool setting, parts kitting and assembly.

The company says the robots run on Large Behavior Models, work the team helped pioneer at the Toyota Research Institute along with related research such as Diffusion Policy. Co-founder and CEO Russ Tedrake is a professor at MIT and formerly Senior Vice President of Large Behavior Models at TRI, per the launch announcement. In a July 15 blog post, he wrote that Walden spun out of TRI in January 2026.

On form factor, Tedrake told the Boston Globe the initial robots pair a humanoid-style upper body — arms and a sensor head — with a base on wheels or a fixed platform. He said wheel bases fit more mature factory safety standards than legged robots and can carry larger batteries. That form-factor detail is from the Globe interview.

Factory deployment claims

The launch announcement states that since February Walden robots have been doing useful work in production at a Toyota plant in North America, moving from first pilot to real work in under two months. Tedrake's blog describes autonomy plus a human available for remote assistance so robots can be useful on day one. On X (@RussTedrake), he said the company was already running a general-purpose robot with an end-to-end policy in production in a major North American factory within months of forming. Those are company and CEO claims, not third-party audits.

Commercially, Tedrake told the Boston Globe Walden is charging fees to use robots rather than selling hardware outright. "Robots as a service is the way we're going right now," he said. "Because the technology is new and the hardware is changing fast." The site's Hire a Walden Robot page is a business inquiry path and does not list consumer retail pricing.

What is not available yet

Walden has not announced a consumer home robot for household purchase or booking. The team page states a long-horizon vision of robots supporting people "in factories, at work, at home, and beyond," while naming manufacturing and logistics as the initial focus. That vision is not a home waitlist, price or ship date.

Outside the company's claimed industrial deployments, treat broad availability as in development. As of July 16, 2026, company materials do not publish the plant location, robot counts, robots-as-a-service dollar rates or independent verification of production performance.

Home robots need not be humanoid: form should follow the job
